The Fofana-Nyei Family Curse

If you’re innocent and young, you don’t have to worry much about the family curse. It is not a familial or filial disease that is wreaking havoc in the Fofana-Nyei family. It’s also not innate or inborn. What’s essential is to be aware of this curse and do all that you can to avoid it. It’s not a makeup or fake story.
What then is the curse, and why should we be afraid of it?
A long time ago, according to our elders at Nyeilla, Bomi County, our ancestors prayed to Allah to preserve future generations of Nyei or Fofana, make them exalted in this life and the next, live an honorable life, and dying except believing in Islam. Allah accepted their prayers. However, because it was due to Jealousy that led قـابيل Qābīl (Cain) to murder وَهـابـيـل Hābīl (Abel), his brother and Jealousy also drove the brothers of Prophet Yūsuf to cast him into a well or intended to kill him our ancestors decided to impose some penalty against siblings who might concoct a plan to hurt another family member.

 What then was the curse?
The curse was that if you hold a grudge against another Nyei due to Jealousy and plan to harm him or her physically or spiritually,  the harm will revert or come back to hurt you and not affect the person who is begrudged
What do I do when my siblings and friends are happy and doing better than me?
Love them, support them, and do not envy their success. Maybe your role is to be the cheerleader or chaperon of the family. If you cast away that position, you will turn down the responsibility Allah has intended for you to perform.
Can you show us an example of family jealousy?
Our dad urged us to support one another no matter what. If one of us is building a house or has achieved greatness or stardom, let’s reach out and congratulate him for this success. Besides, I have never heard of a family where every member of that family is equally wealthy.
What do you think about the curse? Doesn’t it seem cruel and mean to impose a scourge on our family?
The answer is yes; the curse is a harsh measure against terrible behaviors. The question is, which is crueler, killing your sibling or being punished for killing or attempting to kill your siblings or families.

This article is the start of understanding the family cure. We will modify it when we receive additional information.

What My Children Should Know About Their Grandmother

The marriage of Mom, Massa Samuka Sheriff, to Dad, Mohammed Vamunya Nyei, was, in many ways, complementary. It brought together two individuals from different family stature united in begetting and raising outstanding children, most of whom were not their own. Dad descended from a bookish and intellectual family. Mon, on the other hand, came from a middle-class family. Most of her siblings were at least comparatively wealthy. She was a businesswoman why Dad was a teacher, lecturer, farmer, and Imam. Dad was quiet and a bookworm, Mon was an outspoken critic against unethical behaviors. What both families acceded to on the onset of their marriage was the abiding faith in God, performing the daily prayers, and living an Islamic lifestyle. Both families were well respected and borne specific characteristics of note. Our neighbors and those who knew our Dad or the Nyei-Fofana families throughout Bomi County, Cape Mount County, Gbapolu County, Lofa County, and Sierra Leone, and Gallina’s territory areas, respectfully dubbed us Karmoh children, meaning the children of the Iman.
The communities also believed that the Sheriff and Fofana or Nyei families have lineage to Prophet Mohammed and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, one of the earliest disciples of Prophet Mohammed, respectively. They hold the two families in high esteem and revered them both privately and publicly.
Every girl child born in the Nyei family, for instance, holds the given name, Bona, which means, in the Mandingo dialect, sequestered at home or in the house. In other words, any sign of indecorum or failure to conform to religious obligation or etiquette was never tolerated, including marriage before sex, and that kind of thing, disobeying parents, lying, fornicating, stealing, and using obscene language at home.
Mom and Dad lived an exemplary life. I met Dad and mom argue one time in my entire life. When I entered the house where they were arguing, both immediately stopped talking and asked me to leave. I didn’t know what they were talking about or whether they resumed what they were discussing or not.
It was easy for Mother to fit into the Nyei-Fofana household. She stood firmly by her man and quickly became a trusted partner and effective rule enforcer. She set high standards for her children and then demanded them total obedience to the rules. Sometimes Mon and Dad would punish me separately for the same infraction. She was tough and uncompromising. They spared no rod, least we became spoiled. What I hated the most then was not only the punishment but the way Mom talked about it over and over again. So, I quickly decided to comport myself. Common violations or infractions in our household consisted of not praying with the family, or leaving the compound without permission, or not doing your assignment thoroughly. The punishments included timeouts -confinement for hours, sometimes, reading the Quran, or working on your homework. A little corporal punishment like beating our but was allowed. What our parents forbade was excessive and cruel punishment or any torture.
Despite her stringent policing and a disciplinary regime that they imposed on us, Mom never let us go hungry, unkempt, or untidy. She hated seeing another person feed us. Mom was always there to support me achieve my educational goals. Since she traded in cooking oil and managed a restaurant business, Dad, too, still had something on the table to eat.
When Dad died, Mother’s siblings wanted her to return and retire to her hometown, Samuka Town. After all, we, the children, were all grown up. Mon bigger sister, Ma Fatu, and her sister next to her were already living there. But Mon refused to budge. She was royal and faithful not just to her husband but the legacy she helped to build, along with the rest of the family, with their sweat and tears.
She also loved Samuka Town, and she wanted us to do that as well. I remember her telling me that our real Mon was Ma Fatu Sheriff, her bigger sister and that we should always visit with her. And during the sunset of her life, she made sure we saw Ma Fatu and knew our maternal uncles and aunts. Whenever I was on vacation, she will order me to visit her sister first. I did that over and over again until I understood some of the stories unique to the Sheriff Family.

Remembering Brother Mohammed K Nyei

Brother Mohamed Nyei, affectionately called Karmoh, was my guardian angel, protégé, ardent supporter, rule-abiding, and kind. I remember him beating up a boy so severely for hitting me. The police detained him at the local police station downtown Tubmanburg, Bomi County. The next day, Dad and I went to the police station and released him.
The last time I saw him was at the Grand Central Gas Station in Tubmanburg. He accompanied me there to say goodbye as I take a passenger car to Monrovia and then to Morocco to pursue postgraduate studies beginning in the fall of 1989, before the Civil War. He was quiet. He didn’t say much to me, nor did I engage him in any conversation. But I felt his love through the way he looked at me. One of the most remarkable things about him was his generous support when I was studying at the University of Liberia. He often traveled from Bomi County and came down to Monrovia to see me and surprise me with a financial contribution.
The bond that units Brother Karmoh and I are more significant than being born of the same parents. He never lied to me. He never bullied or hit me. He never discouraged me from pursuing my dreams. He never cheated me or told a false tale about me. All that I remember about Brother Karmoh was his uncanny devotion and commitment to protecting and supporting me.
Although he was not sportive or belonged to any gym club, Brother Karmoh was virile, athletically built, stalwart, muscular, and handsome. I envy his poise and the great choice of the spouses he married.
When Brother Mohammed K. died, I sent the family a copy of the eulogy I prepared. In that statement, I said: “When Allah intends to enter you into paradise, He will make you upright and kind.” Brother Mohammed Nyei was indeed the son of Alhaji Varmunya Nyei, whose creed was abiding faith in God, be there for the family no matter what, and make our communities and the world a better for all.
I was sad to leave the family, especially, Mother alone entirely in his care. She had chronic knee and arthritis problems. She was wan and losing her independence; she was approaching her twilight years. Brother Foday, who used to take care of her and the family, had gone to the United States five years earlier. Sheikh Nyei was very young at the time, and Brother Samuka was slowly losing strength due to old age.
The family had this tacit agreement to take advantage of any opportunity to pursue overseas education to receive advanced and competitive knowledge and gain lucrative future employment opportunities but must return home to take care of the family. I reneged on that agreement. Brother Karmoh completely fulfilled his part of the bargain of taking care of the family in my long absence and died doing it, for all of us.
There is so much that we have lost, including mothers, brothers, uncles, aunts, and many more. Brother Foday also died on me here in the United States. But the death of Brother Mohammed K. Nyei, up to today date, continues to distraught and sadden me. I least I buried Brother Foday Nyei, sat at his grave, prayed, and manifested the deep sorrow for his sudden departure from this life.
The children of the Brother Karmoh and Foday, affectionately called Moiwai, are going to help me reconstruct the life they know about their dads, and together, we shall remember and celebrate their memories forever.

What My children Should Know about their grandparents

Maybe the story of my parents, namely Massa Sheriff Nyei and Alhaji Vamunya Mohammed Nyei, without hyperbole or exaggeration, should be written in a hagiography, a biography of saints. That is right. They were more than mere moral and ethical leaders, but a paragon of virtue. They were sent to us and humanity to undergird our actions, teach us superior knowledge about life, justice, honesty, Islam, and the eternal rewards that await those who have unflinching and abiding faith and submission to the will of Allah, and to reach out support to everyone and uniting relatives, siblings, and families.
They lived an exemplary life. I met Dad and mom argue one time in my entire life. When I entered the house where they were arguing, both immediately stopped talking and asked me to leave. I didn’t know what they were talking about or whether they resumed what they were discussing or not. They taught that an acrimonious argument ensures because of misunderstanding the other side of an issue. They told us about a relative who never got angry. His wife and closer friends thought that was a sign of weakness. One day his son got in a fight with another child from the neighborhood. His son was severely beaten; he sustained bruises in the fight. The two neighbors were doomed to go to war because of the incidence. As his family, along with close relatives, prepared and geared up to go and beat up the boy, the father decided to go and ask what happened. And after gathering all the facts, he realized that it was his son, and not the other child, who initiated the fight.
Paragon of virtue. If you gave Dad a dollar to keep and wanted your dollar back later, you are going to get the same dollar that you gave him to keep for you. He will never use your dollar and exchange it with another dollar.
They taught us well earlier in life. Karmo – Alainu, meaning in the vai dialect, the teacher, or preacher children. This is how we were called or referred to by our neighbors and those who knew our Dad or the Nyei-Fofana families throughout Bomi County, Cape Mount County, Gbapolu County, Lofa County, and Sierra Leone, especially Galina Territory areas. They were right because our parents taught a more in-depth understanding meaning of the Quran, Islam, and life at a very early age. I remember learning about Judgement Day, and what transpires in our graves when we died and buried, theology, Islamic laws, ontology, and the divinity of Allah when I was just nine years old. This explains my love for and interest in education. Besides retail business, diamond mining, and farming, teaching was the primary Fofana Nyei family business.
Thy dedicated their life to the family. The families and relatives were all that mattered to my parents. Dad will travel the length and breadth of Liberia, vising distant relatives, bringing home children who had lost their parents, adopting, and caring about them, sometimes, better them his own. I was surprised that some of the closest children to him were not his biological children when he died. I was ten years.
My parents’ faith in Allah, ethical and moral values, and empathy toward their families and relatives were above most. They taught us to always believe in God and empathetic towards humanity. And that work hard, and honest labor will guide me to achieve all that I need in life.
